The Seeing Brain - Neuroscience and Vision

Marc Schönwiesner, Professor, University of Montreal

I will discuss how we see things, and what mechanisms the brain uses to let us perceive colors and forms. I will address questions like: What happens in our brain when we look at images? Can we trust our perception? How do the mechanisms of visual perception influence the way we produce and appreciate visual art? The format of the session will be a science lecture. I will present and discuss scientific illustrations of brain processes and demonstrate visual illusions and examples of visual art that show off the effects of these processes on perception and their relevance to visual practice. There will be small experiments and illusions that allow attendees to experience their visual brain at work.

Attendees will learn:
Seeing is effortless! …But it is a complicated process.
You can't always trust your eyes (or your brain)!
Science and art connect! Understanding this process improves visual practice.

Marc Schönwiesner is a trained neuroscientist and Assistant Professor at the University of Montreal. He received his PhD in biology from the University of Leipzig, Germany, and has worked in Finland and England before coming to Montreal. He publishes and lectures about human perception.

Lisa Arora will be recording Marc's session. She has been an IFVP member since 2008. Based in beautiful Victoria, BC Canada, she serves clients throughout North America.

Graphic Recording 101

Brandy Agerbeck, graphic facilitator, Loosetooth.com
& Lynn Carruthers, graphic recorder, Global Business Network

Brandy Agerbeck and Lynn Carruthers are back with an updated version of their day-long comprehensive look into the wonderful world of capturing big ideas on big sheets of paper. Designed for all levels of skill and experience, GR101 v.3 provides a basic understanding of the craft, the tools and techniques, with real life stories and 'aha!' moments presented by two practitioners with very different working styles and clientele. Graphic Recording 101 was designed for beginners and as a great refresher for seasoned recorders who want to get back to basics. The past two years, Lynn and Brandy's session have earned rave reviews from people who had never touched marker to paper and seasoned recorders alike.

Graphic facilitator Brandy Agerbeck, Loosetooth.com, creates conceptual maps of conversations. Since 1996, her drawing and thinking skills have facilitated groups in finding clarity and understanding their work. Brandy‘s favorite work as a graphic facilitator is with corporate clients with big, complex, abstract issues and messy conversations. Her work tends to be very diagrammatic and colorful.

Lynn Carruthers has been the in-house graphic recorder at Global Business Network for 7 years. "Graphic Recording combines all the things I'm best at:  writing neatly and clearly, listening intently, lots of color, making messes with art supplies, and being involved with a group - though comfortably to the side.

Advanced Practices in Our Field
Julie Gieseke, Visual Facilitator, Trainer and Coach, map the mind
& John Ward, Visual Thinker, Many Minds, Breakthrough Facilitation

New this year is Speed Share: Where do you soar in your work? Where are you challenged or stumped? Here is your chance to ask your colleagues how they would handle it, and share your expertise as a seasoned practitioner. Our focus will be learning from our stories, seeing how we resolve challenges in different ways, and sharing our work as a talented community of practice.

Second is Simultaneous Recording: What does it look like when multiple practitioners record the same content? Do we ever get this chance? In this portion of the day, we will work have the chance to record the same content, then look at our diverse approaches.

We will culminate the day's discoveries through a facilitated conversation, capturing our learning. The day's fun and engaging design taps into our collective wisdom, and will result in a collaborative document of our working knowledge.

Julie Gieseke is a professional Visual Facilitator and coach. She first became involved in the IFVP with the 2008 conference planning team and joined the board last year. As Membership Director, Julie is committed to connecting the IFVP members to other professional networks and expanding the field of visual practitioners. The IFVP membership is a vibrant and creative community with a wealth of knowledge and expertise that she strives to share with new members and communities.

John Ward has been an active participant in IFVP conferences for over 10 years. He is a graphic facilitator who embraces a variety of arts based methods to help people in organizations think and work better together. His clientele includes Fortune 500 corporations, the US Government, numerous non-profits and small businesses. His recent work has focused on leadership development and the cultivation of visual literacy. Adding More Value to World Cafe Events
Nick Payne, graphic recorder and facilitator, armourplatedcamel

Over the past three years I have recorded many World Cafe events with a number of different facilitators and have, I believe, stumbled upon a a different and complementary approach to doing this. Feedback from clients and participants, to date, has been universally positive. World Cafe has, embedded within its very design, an efficient means of harvesting the thoughts and comments of all the participants. So this session will open up a discussion on how graphic recorders can add the most value to the process - seeking to map the different options that are available to recorders and to customers.

Attendees will learn:
A different approach to recording World Cafe
more about the World cafe process
a range of perspectives on the recorder's role in World Cafe

Nick Payne Nick has been working as an independent graphic recorder & facilitator since 2004 and has worked successfully with a wide variety of businesses and public and non-profit organisations in the UK and Europe (e.g. Pepsico, the National Health Service and refugee organisations).

Nick is experienced in group facilitation - and in recording for other facilitators. He is experienced in supporting specific group processes particularly World Café.

Nick has a particular interest in how the fields of visual practice and education can work together and has worked with higher education institutions in the UK and is currently engaged on a summer school for high achieving students in the Las Vegas public school system.

John Ward captures Nick's presentation. He is a visual thinker/facilitator who will do whatever it takes to wake up peoples’ original thinking skills in a meeting. Most of his work is in leadership development. He is based in San Miguel de Allende in Central Mexico.

CEU-ing Coherence, Engagement, and Usefulness in Graphic Facilitation
Al Selvin, Director, Usability – Sales & Marketing Systems, Verizon Telecom

There are many techniques of working with groups to construct visual representations of issues, strategies, and missions. An element common to any method of facilitating such efforts is that the practitioner is responsible for the clarity of the representations and for ensuring that participants get value out of them, as well as that the representations help achieve the goals of the overall project.

This session focuses on these dimensions of practice, which I have summarized in three criteria: coherence, engagement, and usefulness (CEU for short). Participants will discover how the aesthetics (the form given to visual representations) and the ethics (the effects of practitioner choices and moves) intertwine in the heat of the moment in actual practice. They will learn about a framework for analyzing and reflecting on practice, see it applied to video recordings of sessions, and get the opportunity to apply it to an instance of live visual practice.

Attendees will learn:
How to think about their work in terms of the coherence, engagement, and usefulness they foster for their clients and participants
Training in a set of analytic and reflective techniques

Al Selvin is a facilitator, usability specialist, and doctoral candidate at the Knowledge Media Institute, Open University, UK, where his research interests lie in understanding expert human performance in helping people construct representations of difficult problems. He was the original developer of the Compendium approach in the early 1990s and remains a member of its core design team at the Open University, helping to support a global user community. He also has a long-running collaboration with the Center for Creative Leadership and their Visual Explorer approach. As a practitioner, Selvin has facilitated over 500 sessions for industry, academic, and public groups using many visual approaches. He is a Director in the Information Technology Group at Verizon Communications, USA, where he designs user experiences for the call centers supporting Verizon’s residential and small business customers. Previously, he worked as a consultant, user interface designer, technical writer, researcher and musician. He has traveled widely by bicycle and foot in Asia, Europe, and North America. He received a B.A. in Film/Video Studies at the University of Michigan, and an M.A. in Communication Arts from the University of Wisconsin. He resides in Dutchess County, New York, with his family.
